In 2023, xFoundry teamed up with Professor Dave Tilley from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resoirces and the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation for the Smart Living Canopy Competition, challenging student teams to design a self-sustaining canopy for the E. A. Fernandez IDEA Factory's Ortanez Family Terrace that integrates solar power, UMD-developed water capture, and environmental sensing. A multidisciplinary judges panel selected the winning Mosaic Garden Canopy design, a hexagonal armature that generates energy and shade while supporting plant growth and collecting water, whose design mirrors the IDEA Factory's aesthetic and is now funded to be built and installed on the terrace. Small student teams worked over a single 6-hour design sprint and turned multidisciplinary collaboration into a buildable outcome, securing the funding to bring a student-designed, UMD-powered canopy to life in the IDEA Factory.
